Bulldog Hockey Drops Contest Against Minnesota State In CCHA Play

Big Rapids, Mich. – The Ferris State University men's ice hockey squad suffered a 6-2 setback in Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) play against Minnesota State Friday (Nov. 10) at the Ewigleben Ice Arena.

The Bulldogs (3-5-1) returned to CCHA action to host the Mavericks after a non-conference series with St. Lawrence and fell to 1-2-0 in conference play with Friday's setback Minnesota State played its  first CCHA game of the season, starting 1-0-0.

Noah Giesbrecht started between the pipes for the Bulldogs and played the first 23:13 before giving way to Logan Stein. Giesbrecht made 12 saves, but ultimately taking the decision for the game. Stein stopped 13-of-14 shots faced in 36:47 of relief.

Minnesota State built a 3-0 lead in the first period behind goals from Brian Carrabes (4:19), Sam Morton (7:31) and Tyler Haskins (12:59). Morton's goal came on the power play, and he also assisted Carrabes' tally.

The Bulldogs cut the deficit to 3-1 with Tyler Schleppe's second goal of the season at 16:56. Luigi Benincasa rebounded a missed shot off the backboard and fired a pass to the backside for Schleppe, who buried the chance. Benincasa earned his fifth helper of the year.

Carrabes scored at the 1:12 mark in period two, with Lucas Sowder and Mason Wheeler assisting. Campbell Cichosz scored his first collegiate goal at the 3:13 mark, with Sowder and Morton assisting to give the Mavericks a 5-1 lead. Minnesota State got its second power play goal of the evening at 19:18 courtesy of Kaden Bohlsen. Sowder and Carrabes assisted to give the Mavericks a 6-1 lead going into the third period.

The Bulldogs did get a goal at the 14:59 mark of the final period. Emerson Goode scored his first career goal, and Trevor Taulien collected his first career assist. Zach Faremouth also assisted.

Ferris State had 33 shots and went 0-2 on the power play. Minnesota State attempted 31 shots and recorded two power play goals on four tries. 

Sowder had a four-assist night, Morton finished with three points on a goal and two assists and Carrabes had three points on two goals and an assist. Alex Tracy earned the win in goal for the Mavericks with a 31-of-33 performance.

The Bulldogs will be back in action at the Ewigleben Ice Arena on Saturday (Nov. 11) to face the Mavericks again. Puck drop is set for 7:07 p.m. (ET), and the game is Veteran's Appreciation Night. All veterans with a valid military identification will get into the game for $5 at the ticket office.
