Ferris State Tennis Squads Earn Big Road Wins At Davenport To Start Weekend Play

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's and women's tennis squads began Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) weekend road action with a pair of convincing wins as both squads beat Davenport by identical 6-1 margins on Friday (April 1).

The Bulldogs handled the Panthers in their first league road action of the campaign with the victories coming at the Grand Rapids Racquet Club in Grand Rapids.

The women's squad moved to 8-5 overall and 3-1 in the GLIAC with the win while the men's squad, which entered the match ranked 26th nationally, earned a decisive win over the 24th-ranked Panthers to climb to 12-2 overall and a perfect 4-0 in conference play.

"It was an outstanding day for Bulldog Tennis," said FSU head coach Mark Doren. "Today was a convincing win for us on the men's side against a team ranked 24th nationally. Everyone stepped up and played well.

"I'm very proud of the determination we are showing," he added. "After last year's success, we have a target on our back so we know teams are going for us and today we showed our toughness."

The Bulldog women's squad also had a strong effort in the win over the Panthers.

"For the women, we had some excellent tennis from everyone in the lineup," Doren said. "Our depth really showed today as we sat some people with injuries. We had a couple awesome three-set comebacks from Brittany (Lavenant) and Patricia (Martin Gomez)."

Both Ferris State teams return to action as they wrap up their road swing on Saturday (April 2) at Purdue Northwest with both contests getting underway at 3:30 p.m. (ET).
