Bulldog Tennis Squads Earn Split Against Regional Rival UIndy In First Regular-Season Dual Action
Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's and women's tennis squads officially opened up dual regular-season play on Saturday (Feb. 1), earning a split in a regional showdown at the University of Indianapolis.
The Bulldog women's squad knocked off the Greyhounds by a 4-1 score while the 22nd-ranked Bulldog men fell in a 4-2 decision to 12th-ranked UIndy. It marked the first dual contests of the regular-season versus Division II competition for both squads. A year ago, UIndy reached the national quarterfinals in men's action and the Sweet Sixteen on the women's side.
In the women's match, Ferris State scored the initial point as Ana Sofia Hernandez Ferrer and Kennedy Dumas teamed up for a 6-2 decision at one doubles and the duo of Aimee Reynoso and Yara Madi were victorious by a 6-2 margin at three doubles.
In the singles round, Hernandez Ferrer won a three-setter at the top flight and Dumas was a 6-4, 6-1 winner at two singles. Madi claimed a three-set victory in the third position and both the fifth and sixth flights went unfinished upon completion of the match.
In the men's contest, the Bulldogs took the doubles point for the early lead as the pairing of Kevin Kovacs and Erik Kovacs were 6-3 winners at the number one position and the tandem of Milo Leuenberger and Adrian Catahan came away with a 6-4 win at three doubles.
The Greyhounds, though, rallied and claimed four of the five completed singles matches to earn the win. FSU got a three-set triumph from Kevin Kovacs at the top spot in the lineup. The sixth flight featuring Catahan did not finish.
Both Ferris State teams will take on another longtime regional foe in Drury (Mo.) in a neutral site tilt on Sunday (Feb. 2) in Indy to close out the weekend.
