Ferris State Tennis Squads Earn Neutral Site Regional Split Against Drury

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's and women's tennis squads closed out a busy opening weekend of action with a regional split against Drury (Mo.) on Sunday (Feb. 2) in Indianapolis.

The Bulldog women improved to 2-0 overall this year by beating the Panthers 4-3 while the men suffered a 4-1 setback in the regional showdown.

The Bulldog women's squad fell behind early as Drury took the doubles round with wins at the top two flights in the lineup. FSU's tandem of Yara Madi and Aimee Reynoso captured a 7-5 triumph at three doubles.

However, in singles play, the Bulldogs responded and took four of the six matches to come away with the win. FSU got wins at the bottom four flights, including straight-set victories from Mara (#3), Maria Fernanda Hernandez Ferrer (#4), Reynoso (#5) and Katherine Earnest (#6). The closest of the four contests was won by Hernandez Ferrer 7-5, 6-1 at four singles.

Additionally, the Bulldogs' Ana Sofia Hernandez Ferrer dropped a three-set decision at one singles and Kennedy Dumas fell at the second flight in the lineup.

In the men's contest, the Bulldogs took the initial advantage with wins at two of the three doubles positions. FSU's second pairing of Alessandro Santangelo and Kacper Pasielak were 7-8 (8-6) winners at two doubles and Milo Leuenberger and Adrian Catahan teamed up for a 6-2 win at the third flight.

Drury responded to win the top four singles flights to garner the win. Santangelo fought to a three-set decision at two singles and Pasielak was headed to a third-set at the fifth flight when the match was clinched.

Ferris State entered the weekend ranked 22nd in the men's national rankings while Drury was 23rd.

The Bulldgos will host Tiffin on Saturday (Feb. 8) inside the FSU Racquet and Fitness Center in the regular-season home opener. The women's match gets underway at 10 a.m. (ET) with the men's contest slated to begin at 2 p.m. (ET).
