Ferris State Tennis Squads Close Weekend With Home Split Sunday Against Findlay
Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's and women's tennis squads battled to a split on Sunday (Feb. 9) in regional play as both FSU teams closed the weekend against the Findlay Oilers at the Racquet and Fitness Center.
The men's squad earned its first win of the regular-season with a 5-2 triumph while the women suffered their first setback against a Findlay team expected to rank among the region's best in a 6-1 decision.
Previously, the two teams had notched a sweep in the home opener versus Tiffin on Saturday.
"Although this was our first lost of the season for the women's team, I thought we played some really good tennis today," said FSU head coach Mark Doren. "I believe Finley is the top team in the Midwest region this year and we pushed them really well today. Even with the loss, I think we will go forward with more confidence next weekend.
"It was great to get the weekend sweep for the men's team," he added. "It was a much needed weekend against two really good teams. Today I'm most happy with the way we played doubles. We've been talking about bringing extra energy and being more aggressive. And that's what they did today."
In Sunday's men's match, the Bulldogs won the doubles point thanks to victories from the tandem of Kevin and Erik Kovacs at the number one flight and the duo of Alessandro Santangelo and Kacper Pasielak at two doubles.
After grabbing the first point, the Bulldogs then came back in singles play and grabbed four of the six flights to put the Oilers away. Kevin Kovacs was a winner at one singles with Santangelo winning at the two spot in the lineup. Meanwhile, Erik Kovacs claimed a victory at the fifth flight and Adrian Catahan came out a winner at six singles. All four wins came in straight-sets.
In the women's contest, the Bulldogs dropped the doubles point although Yara Madi and Aimee Reynoso came out winners at the third flight by a 6-4 score. Madi also picked up the Bulldogs' lone singles win with a 6-2, 6-2 decision at three singles.
Following the weekend, the Bulldog women are now 3-1 overall and the men hold a 2-2 mark.
Ferris State will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 15, with another regional matchup against McKendree (Ill.) starting at 3 p.m. (ET) in Indianapolis.
