Ferris State Tennis Squads Sweep McKendree In Regional Matchups On Saturday

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's and women's tennis teams opened weekend action with a sweep on Saturday (Feb. 15) as both squads defeated the McKendree (Ill.) Bearcats at a neutral site in Indianapolis.

The Bulldog women recorded a 5-2 victory while the men captured a 4-2 win in regional play.

"It was a great day of tennis," said FSU head coach Mark Doren. "We notched two wins over a very good regional opponent. There were seven three-set matches between the two and we capped it off with a huge third set clinching victory."

The Bulldog women took the doubles point with wins at the first two flights in the lineup from Kennedy Dumas and Maria Fernanda Hernandez Ferrer at one doubles along with the combination of Ana Sofia Hernandez Ferrer and Katherine Earnest at the second position.

In singles play, the women's team got a three-set triumph from Ana Sofia Hernandez Ferrer at the number one flight along with one from Dumas at three singles. Maria Fernanda Hernandez Ferrer was a 6-2, 7-5 winner at four singles while Aimee Reynoso captured a three-set victory at five singles.

In the men's match, Ferris State also picked up the initial point in doubles play. The duo of Kevin Kovacs and Erik Kovacs were victorious at one doubles while Milo Leuenberger and Adrian Catahan pulled out a 6-3 victory at three doubles.

Finally, in the singles round, Kevin Kovacs came away with a straight-set win at one singles as did Erik Kovacs at four singles. The match was clinched by Felipe Iser with a three-set win at five singles.

The Bulldog women improved to 4-1 overall this year with the win and the men are now 3-2 on the year.

Both Ferris State squads will visit Hillsdale to close out the weekend on Sunday (Feb. 16). The women's match is slated for a 10 a.m. (ET) start with the men's contest at 2 p.m. (ET) in Hillsdale.
