Ferris State Men's Tennis Knocks Off #10 Embry-Riddle In Doubleheader Split In Florida

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's and women's tennis squads took on a pair of the nation's top-ranked squads on Wednesday (March 12) in Florida, coming away with a non-league split versus Embry-Riddle.

The Bulldog men posted a massive 5-2 victory over the nation's #10-ranked team while the women fell to an Embry-Riddle squad ranked third in the country.

"What a great day for the Bulldog men," said FSU head coach Mark Doren. "It was a huge way to follow up our loss to Florida Southern this week as Embry-Riddle beat Florida southern just two weeks ago. For us to come out and play the way we did was exciting.

"A big shoutout to our doubles," he added. "All three came away with wins and I feel that was a large factor in our energy that carried over into singles play."

The pairing of Erik Kovacs and Kevin Kovacs were 6-3 winners for the men at the top doubles position while Alessandro Santangelo teamed up with Kacper Pasielak for a 6-4 win at two doubles. Finally, Mile Leuenberger and Adrian Catahan came up with a 6-4 triumph at three doubles.

In singles play, Santangelo won in threes sets at two singles and FSU also got three-set victories from Felipe Iser and Jose Andres Perez Alarcon at four and five singles, respectively. Catahan earned a straight-set triumph at the sixth flight in the lineup.

In the women's contest, Embry-Riddle won the doubles point although the Bulldog pairing of Ana Sofia Hernandez Ferrer and Katherine Earnest recorded a 6-4 decision at two doubles. Embry-Riddle won all six singles flights in straight-sets overall.

The Bulldog men's squad improved to 6-4 overall this year with the upset win while the women are now 5-3 on the year.

Both teams will be back in action on Friday (March 14) against St. Mary's (Texas) in neutral site play starting at 10:30 a.m. (ET) in Melbourne, Fla.
