Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University softball squad dropped a pair of close Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) decisions to the Ashland Eagles on Friday (Apirl 2) in Ashland, Ohio.
The Bulldogs suffered a 4-2 loss in the opener before dropping a 8-0 decision in five innings in the nightcap.
In the opener, Ashland scored twice in the third inning and one more time in the fourth in building the early edge. The Eagles added another run in the sixth before FSU scored twice in the seventh to trim the final margin.
Ashland limited FSU to only three hits in game one and the Bulldogs also had five errors in the field with AU notching 10 total hits.
Third baseman Lexi Hongisto doubled for FSU while catcher Emily Reed and second baseman Logan Fleming also both produced hits. Centerfielder Paige Kortz accounted for FSU's only RBI.
Sophomore Abby Highway threw all six innings in the opener and allowed three earned runs on 10 hits with five strikeouts and three walks. AU's Laney Jones totaled nine K's in getting the win for the Eagles on the three-hitter.
In game two, the Eagles scored twice in the bottom of the second and the score stood until they added six more runs in the fourth and held FSU off the board in the top of the fifth to end the game. AU had eight hits to four for the Bulldogs in the finale.
Kortz led FSU at the plate with two hits while designated player Emily Smith and leftfielder Jacki Stone both added hits in the setback.
Senior Sam Bates pitched the nightcap for the Bulldogs and allowed four earned runs on eight hits in four innings of work. AU's Hannah Stroe earned the shutout win and struck out four in five frames for the Eagles.
The Bulldogs are back in action on Saturday (April 28) with a twinbill at Wayne State starting at 1 p.m. (ET) for game one and 3 p.m. (ET) for game two in Detroit. FSU then returns home to host Purdue Northwest in the final regular-season action at home on Sunday (April 29) beginning at noon.
