Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University softball team officially opened the 2019 campaign with a split on Sunday (Feb. 3) in non-league regional action in Louisville, Ky.
The Bulldogs, under second-year head coach Kristin Janes, registered an impressive 9-1 victory over Findlay in the season opener Sunday morning before falling to host Bellarmine 3-1 in the nightcap during afternoon action.
In the opener, the Bulldogs trailed 1-0 against the Oilers before scoring three runs in the bottom of the fifth to grab the lead. FSU then put the game away with six runs in the sixth to account for the final score in the six-inning contest.
Overall, the Bulldogs pounded out 11 hits in game one and allowed only three hits to the Oilers. Senior shortstop Logan Fleming led FSU at the plate with three hits, including a double, and added a pair of RBI's.
Ferris State also got a multiple-hit performance from first baseman Kaitlyn Orme with both second baseman Kodi Ramirez and outfielder Paige Kortz driving in two runs each. Orme and Kortz both notched triples while catcher Rebecca Piron doubled in the victory.
Junior pitcher Abby Highway got the win in the opener by allowing only one run on three hits with seven strikeouts and a walk.
In game two, Bellarmine struck for two runs in the first and added another run in the third. FSU managed to score its only run in the fifth and suffered the loss despite outhitting the Knights 3-1 for the game.
Ferris State's three hits in the nightcap included two from senior third baseman Lexi Hongisto along with one from Kortz, who accounted for the Bulldogs' only RBI. Hongisto doubled in the setback.
Newcomer Connor Proctor pitched all six innings for the Bulldogs in the nightcap and struck out six batters while walking three in her debut.
The Bulldogs will wrap up their trip to Kentucky with a non-league doubleheader at Kentucky State on Monday (Feb. 4) in Frankfort, Ky. First pitch for game one is set now for 10 a.m. (ET) with game two to follow at approximately 12 p.m. (ET).
