Ferris State Holds On To Beat SVSU For Fourth-Straight Victory
Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's basketball squad won its fourth-straight game as the Bulldogs pulled out a hard-fought 60-56 triumh over Saginaw Valley State in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play on Thursday (Jan. 31) night at O'Neill Arena in University Center.
The Bulldogs took a 28-25 halftime lead and extended the margin to 14 points heading into the final period before SVSU rallied and climbed back within a basket. However, the Bulldogs made several key plays down the stretch to pull out the triumph.
Junior Riley Blair led the Bulldogs with 21 points and seven rebounds while freshman guard Shaniya Huggins added 13 points in the win. FSU also got nine points off the bench from freshman Jalynn Brumfield while junior center Brayene Benner had a personal career-high 20 rebounds to go with four points, three blocks and a steal.
FSU shot 39% for the game and hit one-of-seven (14.3%) three's in addition to seven-of-11 (63.6%) free throws. Meanwhile, SVSU went 38.7% from the floor and connected on four-of-22 (18.2%) long range tries along with four-of-nine (44.4%) free throws.
The Cardinals received 15 points from Maddie Barrie to go with 13 points from senior Hannah Settingsgaard in the setback.
The Bulldogs outrebounded SVSU 48-35 for the night and had 13 offensive caroms along with six steals and four blocked shots. SVSU finished with five steals and two blocks.
Overall, FSU outscored the Cardinals 20-13 in points off turnovers and 48-34 inside the paint. The Bulldogs also owned a 15-3 margin in bench scoring.
With the win, Ferris State improved to 11-7 overall and 8-4 in the GLIAC. The Cardinals fell to 3-16 overall and 3-9 in conference action.
Ferris State will visit Northwood on Saturday (Feb. 2) for a 4 p.m. (ET) league tilt in Midland.
