Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's basketball squad pulled out a big road win on Thursday (Jan. 16) evening as FSU opened a two-game road set with a 75-69 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) win at Parkside in Wisconsin.
Ferris State took over sole possession of second place in the GLIAC standings with the win, breaking a three-way tie with the Rangers and Northern Michigan, which dropped a league home game. The Bulldogs are now 12-4 overall and 6-1 in league action, sitting only a game-behind nationally top-ranked Grand Valley State.
FSU trailed by a single point at the end of the opening frame, but held a five-point halftime lead in the game. UWP trimmed the margin to four after three periods, but the Bulldogs outscored the Rangers 15-13 in the fourth to garner the win.
The game featured 10 lead changes and the score was tied five times with neither team hold a lead larger than seven points on the night.
Junior Mia Riley had a big game for the Bulldogs with a contest-best 21 points while adding eight rebounds and two steals. Junior Mya Hiram added 16 points for FSU while senior guard Kenzie Bowers posted 14 points to go with six assists and three steals. The Bulldogs also got 11 points from junior Elle Irwin, who added four steals in the win.
The Bulldogs shot 40.6% overall, but were also 10-of-27 (37.0%) from three-point range and went nine-of-10 (90.0%) at the free throw line.
Defensively, the Bulldogs forced 20 turnovers and outscored UWP 22-5 in points off turnovers while coming up with 12 steals. FSU also outscored the Rangers 7-0 on the break.
The Rangers shot 45.8% overall and finished seven-of-22 (31.8%) from long range in addition to eight-of-14 (57.1%) at the free throw stripe. UWP did win the rebounding battle 42-30 and came up with nine offensive boards, which led to a 12-5 advantage in second chance scoring.
Parkside had four players reach double-figure scoring and was led by Chloe Van Zeeland with 15 points. Both Lillie Peterson and Cassidy Arni notched 12 points with Kendal Zeiter recording 10 points off the bench.
UWP fell to 10-4 overall and 5-2 in the GLIAC with the loss.
Ferris State will visit Purdue Northwest on Saturday (Jan. 18) for a 2 p.m. (ET) league road encounter in Hammond, Ind.
