Ferris State Pulls Away For Road Triumph At Lake Superior State
Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's basketball squad pulled away from a 83-46 victory over Lake Superior State on Thursday (Jan. 30) evening in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play at LSSU's Bud Cooper Gymnasium in Sault Ste. Marie.
In the second matchup of the year between the two league rivals, Ferris State used a late first-half charge to build a 17-point halftime lead at 40-23 over LSSU. Junior Mia Riley had 11 points in the opening half while fellow junior Mya Hiram added 10 points for FSU in the first two periods of action.
FSU jumped the lead to 55-27 midway thru the third quarter of play. The Bulldogs extended the lead to 63-32 after the third period before closing the game out.
Riley finished with a team-high 16 points for FSU while junior guard Elle Irwin added 15 points and Hiram chipped in 14 points. All 10 Bulldog players in uniform played and scored for Ferris State in the triumph.
The Bulldogs shot 45.6% from the floor and also made nine three's along with 12-of-17 (70.6%) free throws. FSU also won the rebounding battle 51-24 overall with 18 offensive boards and a 22-4 margin in second chance scoring.
With the win, the Bulldogs improved to 15-5 overall this year and held onto second place in the GLIAC standings with a 9-2 league mark.
The Bulldogs will return home to Jim Wink Arena and host league newcomer Roosevelt University on Monday (Feb. 3) evening with tipoff set for 5:30 p.m. (ET) in Big Rapids. The contest will be a Blackout game with FSU slated to wear its black road uniforms for the tilt and fans are encouraged to wear black. In addition, it will be Community Heroes Night and all first responders, including police, fire and medical personnel can receive free admission at the gate.
