University Center, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's basketball squad closed out the regular-season on the road Saturday (March 1), falling 70-67 to Saginaw Valley State in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play at O'Neill Arena in University Center.
Saginaw Valley State jumped in front and led 11-5 midway thru the first period of play, but the Bulldogs responded and took a three-point lead after the opening frame. FSU held a one-point lead at halftime and extended the margin to six in the third quarter at the five minute mark.
Ferris State stretched the lead to as many as eight points in the third, but SVSU closed to within one before a basket from Mya Hiram at the end of the period gave FSU a 59-56 edge after three periods. The advantage was five with four minutes remaining. However, Saginaw Valley State finished strong and came away with the win.
The Bulldogs were led by senior guard Kenzie Bowers with a team-high 20 points. Both Mya Hiram and Mia Riley added 12 points each.
FSU was held to 39.7% shooting and went nine-of-27 (33.3%) from long range along with 12-of-14 (85.7%) at the free throw line.
The Bulldogs held a 38-33 rebounding margin, but also had 17 turnovers as SVSU held a 19-10 margin in points off turnovers.
The Cardinals got a game-high 24 points from Megan McCalla along with 15 points by Lydia Meredith and 11 points from Ava Locklear.
Ferris State will host a GLIAC Tournament Quarterfinal game on Wednesday (March 5) at 5:30 p.m. (ET) inside Jim Wink Arena. The Bulldogs will be the number three seed and host sixth-seeded Roosevelt.
