Women's Soccer Plays Northern Michigan To 1-1 Draw In Two Overtimes
For the second time this season, the Ferris State University women's soccer team played Northern Michigan to a two-overtime draw as each team netted a regulation goal in Sunday's (Oct. 17) 1-1 tie in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) outing at FSU's Top Taggart Field in Big Rapids, Mich.
Earlier this season (Sept. 17), the two conference North Division teams finished a league matchup at Marquette, Mich., in a scoreless double-overtime tie.
With the tie, Ferris State is now 7-5-3 overall and 7-3-2 in the GLIAC's North Division this campaign. The Bulldogs are 7-1-3 in their last 11 encounters to date, which includes a current five-match unbeaten string with a 3-0-2 mark.
Ferris State went up 1-0 in the first half as junior forward Bri Borgman (Holland/West Ottawa) scored her team-leading 10th goal of the year at the 23:40 mark. Borgman increased her season offensive output to a career season-high 23 points as she trapped the ball just outside the Northern Michigan goal on a corner kick from senior defender-midfielder Kristen March (Canton/Plymouth Salem). Borgman was able to deflect the ball past NMU goalkeeper Jessica Baker for the match's initial score. The 2009 All-GLIAC First-Team performer's goal marked the sixth time this fall in which she has scored into the opposition's net.
The Bulldogs held the one-goal advantage until the 53rd minute of the second half when Northern Michigan tallied the equalizer on Amelia Johnson's seventh goal of the season. Johnson collected an upfield pass off the foot of Brekelle Sellers and outraced three FSU players toward the Bulldog goal on a breakaway opportunity. Johnson shot the ball from the right side of the goal box into the upper left-side corner of the Ferris State net to tie the contest.
In the first overtime, Northern Michigan accounted for all three shots but was unable to connect past FSU freshman goalkeeper Rachel McCollum (Grand Blanc), who concluded with nine saves in the match and is now 7-5-3 on the season record wise. Northern Michigan's Jessica Baker finished the day with seven stops.
Ferris State recorded the lone shot on goal in the second overtime and nearly scored within the final minutes but Bri Borgman's shot went just wide of the Wildcats' goal.
Ferris State was whistled for 18 fouls in the match with eight coming in the second half while Northern Michigan was assessed 13 fouls. Both teams also had one of their players called for a yellow card.
Prior to the regular-season home finale, Ferris State paid tribute to its six senior student-athletes - Kristen March, midfielder Kara Lovelace (East Kentwood), midfielder Sam Harrington (Ypsilanti/Lincoln), midfielder Megan Stec (Novi), forward Carlee Boyle (Lockport, Ill.), and defender Ellen Phillips (Middleville/Thornapple-Kellogg).
Ferris State will now go on the road for its final three regular-season conference matches, starting this Friday (Oct. 22) against the Findlay (Ohio) Oilers. The match will get underway at 4 p.m. (EDT).
