Ferris Plays NMU to a Scoreless Overtime Tie
Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's soccer team battled to a scoreless tie against the Northern Michigan Wildcats in double overtime this Friday (Sept. 16) afternoon in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) match at the FSU Soccer Field in Big Rapids, Mich.
Northern Michigan entered the contest ranked 13th in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Division II Poll.
The tie brings FSU's record to 1-4-1 overall and 1-1-1 in GLIAC North Division play. Northern Michigan's record stands at 4-0-2 overall and 2-0-1 against conference competition.
The contest was scoreless through the 90 minute stanza, plus an additional two 10-minute overtime periods.
Bulldog sophomore goalkeeper, Rachel McCollum (Grand Blanc), saved six shots on the goal in 110 minutes of action. Jessica Baker, goalkeeper for Northern Michigan, tallied four saves in the match.
Senior defender Mekyla Spraggins (Grand Rapids/Forest Hills Central) and sophomore defender Amanda Foster (Byron Center/South Christian) led the Bulldogs in minutes played, both playing for the full 110 minutes in the match.
The second half held plenty of chances with each team having four shots on goal. Ferris State freshman midfielder Leanne Boehm (Macomb/Henry Ford) had two shots on goal, which was a match high for the Bulldogs. Senior forward Bri Borgman (Holland/West Ottawa) and freshman forward Sam Kay (Portage/Northern) accounted for two shots on goal apiece. Borgman also had two shots in the match, contributing to a team total of 7.
Northern Michigan tallied six shots on goal, and 13 shots in the extended match. Forward Amelia Johnson and forward Chelsea Lyons accounted for two shots on goal each.
Fouls were high in the match, with Northern Michigan racking up 15. Ferris State was issued 17, including a yellow card and red card. The Bulldogs had the corner kick edge with five, opposed to the Wildcats' two tries.
Ferris State continues home field play this Sunday (Sept. 18) against the Michigan Tech Huskies at the FSU Soccer Field in Big Rapids, Mich. The action begins at 12 p.m. (EDT)
