Women's Soccer Falls In GLIAC Quarterfinals

Big Rapids, Mich. – The Ferris State University women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision against Ashland this afternoon (Nov. 1) in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Women's Soccer Tournament Quarterfinal Round at Ferguson Field in Ashland, Ohio.

The loss eliminates Ferris State from the conference's postseason tournament and ends the Bulldogs' 2011 season at 7-9-3 overall.

The match was scoreless through the first half before Ashland tallied the lone goal of the match at the 53:59 mark of the contest when Lexi Griuch's shot from 10 yards out beat the FSU defense with a pass from Kathleen Demaree.

Four Bulldogs played in all 90 minutes of action, including sophomore goalkeeper Rachel McCollum (Grand Blanc) and defenders Kasey Ruimveld (Vicksburg), Mekyla Spraggins (Grand Rapids) and Amanda Foster (Byron Center).

The first half saw three shots on goal from Ferris State, including two from junior forward Hillary Procunier (Davison). However, they were unable to get one thru the Ashland defense in the second half.

McCollum took the loss in goal and made one save for Ferris State while Rebecca Plescia earned the victory by stopping three FSU shots on net.

The contest was a physical one that saw 12 Ashland fouls, including two yellow cards given with just eight seconds left in the match. FSU totaled nine fouls with four in the first half and five in the second.

Ferris State held the advantage in shots in the contest as the Bulldogs accounted for 11 to Ashland's four. The Bulldogs had a commanding edge with eight shots in the first half. Ashland held the corner kick edge with four as FSU had only one.

Ferris State's appearance in this year's GLIAC Tournament represented the program's fourth ever as the Bulldogs made their second-straight appearance. They also made the tournament in 2007 and 2008 before the back-to-back trips in 2010 and 2011.
