FSU Falls Short In Non-League Game At GVSU

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's soccer team battled nationally third-ranked archrival Grand Valley State on Wednesday (Sept. 12) evening, but came out on the short end of a 1-0 decision in Allendale, Mich.

The contest was a non-league game and will not count toward the conference standings as part of the GLIAC's scheduling formula this season, which features each league school playing its rival partner in both a conference and non-conference contest.  FSU hosts GVSU in the rematch in league play on Oct. 6.

The Lakers registered the only goal of the contest at 40:58 of the opening half on a corner kick.  Erin Hilbert was credited with her first goal of the year.

Overall, the Lakers had 20 total shots compared to four for the Bulldogs, but only seven came on goal.  Hillary Procunier earned FSU's lone shot on goal in the match.

Bulldog junior goalkeeper Rachel McCollum played the entire 90 minutes in net and made five saves.  Meanwhile, Chelsea Parise also went the distance for the Lakers and had a single save.

The Lakers totaled nine fouls to six for Ferris State and also held a 4-1 edge in corner kick opportunities.

The contest was the first of the season that did not go to overtime for the Bulldogs and each of FSU's four outings to date have been decided by a single goal or less.

Ferris State will host Ohio Dominican in its 2012 home and league opener this Friday, Sept. 14, in Big Rapids.  Match time is set for 4 p.m. (ET) at the FSU Soccer Field.

The Bulldogs then will entertain Ashland on Sunday (Sept. 16) in a 12 p.m. (ET) league home tilt.
