FSU Women's Soccer Coach Matt Kellogg Tabbed As D1 Head Coach At North Dakota

Big Rapids, Mich. - After leading the Ferris State University program to unprecedented heights including a third-straight Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Tournament appearance this past fall, Bulldog women's soccer head coach Matt Kellogg has announced his resignation upon being tabbed today (Jan. 7) as the new head coach at NCAA Division I North Dakota.

Kellogg spent the past three seasons as the Bulldogs' head coach and led FSU to the conference tournament semifinals for only the second time in school history this past fall.  Ferris State concluded the 2012 campaign with a 9-7-3 overall record under Kellogg's direction.

A national search for his successor is currently underway.

"Matt has built a solid foundation and we will miss his contributions to our department and the Bulldog women's soccer program," said FSU Athletics Director Perk Weisenburger.  "We congratulate him on his move to a head coaching position at the Division I level and wish him well at North Dakota."

Kellogg inherited a Ferris State squad that went 3-13-3 in the year prior to his arrival and led the Bulldogs to the GLIAC Tournament three consecutive seasons for the first time in program history. This past season, two of Kellogg's student-athletes earned all-region honors in junior defender Amanda Foster and sophomore midfielder Riley Wood. His team also recorded a 3.65 grade point average, its third straight semester with a 3.30 team GPA or higher.

Under Kellogg, the Bulldogs posted identical 7-9-3 records in both 2010 and 2011 prior to winning nine games this past fall.  It represented only the fifth time in the program's 14-year history in which FSU won at least nine contests in a campaign.  He served as the Bulldogs' fourth head coach since the program's inception in 1999 and was also active in the local Big Rapids soccer community.

Prior to his arrival at Ferris State, Kellogg served as an assistant women's soccer coach and recruiting coordinator at a pair of NCAA Division I schools, Morehead (Ky.) State University and the University of Kentucky. In 2009, Kellogg's lone season at Morehead State, the Eagles captured the program's first-ever Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) regular season championship with a 5-0-3 conference record (8-7-4 overall).

While at Kentucky, Kellogg served as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator during the 2007 and 2008 campaigns. Prior to his stint at UK, Kellogg spent three seasons (2004-07) as an assistant coach at Western Michigan University. He also was the head women's soccer coach at Kalamazoo (Mich.) College from December 2002 to February 2004 after being an assistant at the school for the 2002 season. Kellogg has also spent several seasons working for the United States Olympic Development Program in various coaching roles.

Kellogg is a 2000 graduate of Butler University in Indianapolis, where he earned a bachelor's degree in marketing and was a two-year letterwinner on the soccer team. He also participated in track and field for one season. Kellogg earned his master's degree in sports administration from Western Michigan in 2005.  He holds an United States Soccer Federation (USSF) National B License and a National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Advanced National Goalkeeping Certificate.

North Dakota posted a 2-13-1 mark this past fall in its fifth and final season under previous head coach Kristen Gay.

"Matt brings to the position a strong emphasis on player development, a commitment to academics, an understanding of the critical importance of involvement in the local soccer community, and an extensive combination of head and assistant coaching experiences at the collegiate level," said North Dakota Athletic Director Brian Faison said. "No one will work harder to build a winner for UND soccer."
