Women's Soccer Drops Season Opener In Overtime On The Road

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's soccer team suffered a heart-breaking 1-0 overtime setback to highly-regarded regional foe Wisconsin-Parkside on Thursday (Sept. 5) in the squad's season opener at Kenosha, Wis.

The Rangers, who reached the NCAA Division II Sweet Sixteen a year ago and have advanced to regional postseason action the last three consecutive years, scored the lone goal of the contest in the 92nd minute when Jasmine Espino found the back of the net in overtime.

The two teams battled thru 90 scoreless minutes during regulation as Ferris State senior Rachel McCollum tallied six saves and her counterpart, UWP's Mallory Geurts, came up with three saves for the Rangers.

Wisconsin-Parkside held a 13-10 edge in total shots with seven on net compared to three for the Bulldogs.  Overall, FSU totaled 17 fouls to 15 for UWP while the Rangers were twice called for offsides to only once for Ferris State.

The Bulldogs' Stephanie Garland had a contest-best tying three total shots with two coming on goal.  Meanwhile, Jenna Ruimveld had two total attempts for the Bulldogs.

On the Wisconsin-Parkside end, Ashley Meyer also recorded three shots and three other players had two each.

The contest marked the debut for first-year Ferris State head coach Andy McCaslin, who helped the Bulldogs reach the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Tournament Semifinals as an assistant a year ago.

Ferris State will face another Midwest Regional opponent on the road in Lewis (Ill.) this Saturday (Sept. 7) with kickoff set for 3:30 p.m. (ET) in Romeoville, Ill.
