Ferris State Falls To Lewis In Regional Season-Opening Action At Top Taggart Field

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University women's soccer squad kicked off the 2016 campaign at home on Thursday (Sept.1), but suffered a 3-0 setback in regional action to the Lewis Flyers at FSU's Top Taggart Field in Big Rapids.

The Flyers benefited from a pair of own goals scored by the Bulldogs in taking the season-opening road victory over the Bulldogs.

After a close opening half of action, the Flyers recorded the opening goal of the match in the 26th minute of the first frame as the Bulldogs tried to clear a corner kick in the box and put it in the back of their own net.

The 1-0 score stood up until the 69th minute when Lewis' Mallory Richardson scored her first goal of the campaign on a play in front of the net assisted by Jessica Chavez.

Lewis then sealed the win when the Bulldogs again hampered themselves with another own goal on the back end at 86:12 of the contest.

Overall, despite the loss Ferris State outshot the Flyers 15-13 for the day, including a 9-6 edge in the final half. Lewis, though, owned a 9-3 advantage in corner kick chances against FSU.

The contest was the first of the year for the Bulldogs, who are coming off the program's most successful season in school history.

Ferris State continues its season-opening homestand against another Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) opponent in St. Joseph's (Ind.) on Sunday (Sept. 4) with match time set for 12 p.m. (ET) at Top Taggart Field.
