Ferris State Advances To GLIAC Semifinals With Decisive Home Win Over Davenport

Big Rapids, Mich. – The nationally 14th-ranked Ferris State University women's soccer team broke the all-time program record for single season victories with a 4-1 win over the Davenport Panthers in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Tournament Quarterfinals on Tuesday (Oct. 30) afternoon at the Bulldog Soccer Field.

The Bulldogs' 15th win of the season broke the school record set by the 2015 team that finished 14-5-1 overall. Ferris State also tied the school record for most goals scored in a single season with 46, set by the 2006 and 2007 teams, while advancing to the league tournament semifinals.

After a fairly even opening third of the game, the Bulldogs opened the scoring at 31:50 when freshman Lilly Campbell scored her first collegiate goal on a long drive that found the top left corner, unassisted, for a 1-0 Bulldog lead.

Out of the half, the Bulldogs started firing on all cylinders. Soon after, only 19 seconds into the second half, the Bulldogs went up 2-0 when senior Carley Dubbert fired in her eighth goal of the season. Freshman Grace VerHage picked up her third assist of the season on the goal.

The goal stood as the eventual game-winner, which moved Dubbert's career total to 10 game-winning goals, one behind the all-time school record holder Emily Rogers (11).

Later, at 67:01, VerHage added to her strong second half with her fourth goal of the season, giving FSU a 3-0 edge. Mackenzie Dawes picked up her team-leading sixth assist of the season.

The second-seeded Bulldogs capped their scoring when redshirt freshman Merin McDermott was taken down in the box for a penalty. Sophomore Abigail Gilmore cashed in on the penalty kick for her fifth goal of the season and a 4-0 advantage for the Bulldogs.

Seventh-seeded Davenport broke the shutout bid at 86:12 when Sabrina Stone beat Ferris State junior goalkeeper Alison Chesterfield on a shot, accounting for the 4-1 final.

Ferris State had a 27-15 advantage in shots and a 10-5 shots on goal margin in the game. Chesterfield moved to 8-1-0 in net, making four stops in the process for Ferris State. Davenport's Macie DeWyse took the loss to fall to 6-10-0, making six saves in 71 minutes of action.

With the win, the Bulldogs advanced to the GLIAC Tournament Semifinals, hosted by top-seeded Grand Valley State in Allendale. Ferris State will take on third-seeded Saginaw Valley State for the third time this season on Friday (Nov. 2) in the second semifinal at 7:30 p.m. (ET) with the league tournament title game set for Sunday (Nov. 4) at 1 p.m. (ET).
