Mergener Scores Twice As Bulldogs Sprint Past Walsh

Canton, Ohio - The Ferris State University women's soccer team wrapped up its two-game Ohio swing with a non-conference 5-0 victory over the Walsh Cavaliers on Sunday (Sept. 12) at Terry Staudt Field.

Bulldog Senior Emily Mergener scored twice and added an assist in the winning effort as freshman keeper Darya Mosallaei picked up her third consecutive shutout victory in the win. Ferris State outscored their Ohio opponents 8-0 on the trip with wins over both Ashland and Walsh.

Ferris State got on the board at 11:53 when Mergener danced past Walsh keeper Romina Parraguez, who dove and missed the takeaway. Mergener tapped in her first goal of the campaign for a 1-0 Bulldog lead and the eventual game-winning goal.

Later, at 23:29, FSU senior Pia Nagel roped a shot over Parraguez for her second goal of the season into the top left corner. Mergener picked up her first assist of the year on the play to make it 2-0 Ferris State.

In the second half, Ferris State stepped on the gas at 68:08 when junior Payton Price scored her second of the yeaf for a 3-0 lead.

The Bulldogs capped the scoring with a pair of goals 3:10 apart in the closing minutes. Senior Grace VerHage scored her first of the year at 84:17 followed by Mergener's second of the day and season at 87:27 from senior Edina Taerbaum (1).

Ferris State put up strong possession numbers with a 23-4 margin in shots and 15-2 in shots on goal. The Bulldogs attempted four corner kicks and held the Cavaliers to just a pair of tries.

In goal, Parraguez took the loss for Walsh with five saves. Mosallaei ran her shutout streak to three consecutive starts to move to 3-1-0, making two saves including a highlight reel diving stop in the first half.

The Bulldogs hit the road to take on the Parkside Rangers on Friday (Sept. 17) at 1 p.m. (ET) as they open their defense of their first-ever Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championship.
