Postgame Highlights & Interview
Big Rapids, Mich. – The Ferris State University women's soccer team suffered a 2-0 setback against the Ashland Eagles on Sunday (Sept. 15) at the Bulldog Soccer Field.
The contest took place as part of a 25th anniversary celebration for Bulldog women's soccer as alumni of the program returned to campus for the special event.
FSU (1-1-2) suffered its first defeat of the season at the hands of the Eagles (2-1). Freshman Morgan Fillion made her third start as the goalkeeper for Ferris State, playing all 90 minutes and recording the first loss of her career.
Neither team scored in the first half. Ashland attempted five corner kicks and had two shots on goal, but the Bulldog defense and Fillion kept the Eagles off the board.
Ashland changed goalkeepers to start the second half. Maddie Dolenga played the first 45 minutes before giving way to Mackenzie Simon. Simon made the lone save for the Eagles on a second half shot from Isabella Baron.
Emily Pate scored her first goal of the season with 20 minutes remaining in the game to put the Eagles up 1-0. McKinley Mendenhall assisted. Less than a minute later, Dani Hicks scored unassisted to give the Eagles a 2-0 advantage late in the game. FSU was unable to come back and ultimately suffered its first loss of the season.
Fillion faced five shots on goal, and she made three saves. Ashland had 11 corner kicks and the Bulldogs did not attempt a corner kick. FSU recorded one shot on goal and both teams committed nine fouls.
Ferris State will head on the road for two contests next weekend to kick off GLIAC play. First, the Bulldogs will face Roosevelt on Friday (Sept. 20) at 2 p.m. (ET). FSU will then face Wisconsin-Parkside on Sunday (Sept. 22) at 1 p.m. (ET).
