Fillion Shuts Out the Huskies as Ferris State Soccer Concludes Trip With 2-0 Victory

Houghton, Mich. – The Ferris State University women's soccer squad finished its weekend in the Upper Peninsula with a 2-0 victory over Michigan Tech on Sunday (Oct. 6) in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play.

The Bulldogs (4-2-3, 3-1-1 GLIAC) bounced back after a 3-0 loss against Northern Michigan Friday (Oct. 4) to earn their third conference win of the season. Freshman goalkeeper Morgan Fillion earned the win for Ferris State with a strong eight-save performance.

FSU scored first at 16 minutes of the opening half. Katherine Welch intercepted a Huskies' pass and sent the ball to Haley Buckman, who was racing towards the box. Buckman then fired a shot that beat MTU goalkeeper Bri Barrows to the low-right corner to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead. The goal was Buckman's fourth of the season, and Welch got her team-leading fourth assist of the campaign.

Welch then scored a goal of her own at 28:27 to give FSU a 2-0 advantage. She stole the ball from a Huskies' defender near the top of the box and fired a shot to the lower-left corner for her second goal of the year.

Neither team scored the rest of the way, sealing FSU's third GLIAC win of the season. Fillion's eight saves were the most by a Bulldog keeper so far this season, and she earned her second shutout of the year.

For the game, the Bulldogs had four shots on goal compared to eight for the Huskies. FSU had three corner kicks and committed 18 fouls. MTU had one corner kick and nine fouls.

Welch recorded two shots on goal while Buckman and Natalia Leavens each had one. Buckman and Welch each increased their season point totals to eight, good for the team lead.

Ferris State will be back in action next Sunday (Oct. 13) for a road GLIAC contest against Purdue Northwest. The Bulldogs will visit the Pride for a 12 p.m. (ET) kickoff.
