Big Rapids, Mich. – Senior forward Brinley Bell recorded her first career multi-goal game as the Ferris State University women's soccer squad scored a season-high seven goals in a big win over Roosevelt University Sunday (Nov. 3) at the Bulldog Soccer Field.
FSU collected three points in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) standings with Sunday's win. The Bulldogs (7-5-4, 6-4-2 GLIAC) are currently in fourth place of the GLIAC standings with two regular season games remaining.
In Sunday's win, six Bulldogs recorded a goal, including five players who scored their first goal of the season. Ava Fuller, Emerson Lukomski, Abby Druelle and Megan Buchan each recorded their first collegiate goals, while Lindsay Cole scored her first of the year.
"It's great to have players who can score goals," said Ferris State Head Coach Greg Henson. "Ava Fuller's a young freshman who has had a lot of great chances, so it was great to see her get herself on the board."
Lauren Kubacki earned her second win with a shutout victory over the Lakers in 63:06 of game action. Keelee Griffin registered two saves in the final 26:54 of play. FSU's seven goals was a season-high, as were the Bulldogs' 23 shots on goal and 46 total shot attempts.
"We put together 90 minutes as a team," Bell said. "Different players came off the bench and everyone implemented and pursued their role exactly how they were supposed to. This win meant a lot to us."
Fuller got the scoring started for Ferris State at 13:46 of the first half. Isabella Baron played a ball into the box where Fuller worked around Roosevelt's defense and goalkeeper, Roxana Herrera, for the goal.
FSU took a 2-0 advantage at 25:26 with Cole's first scoring strike this year. Katherine Welch took a shot that was blocked and then gathered by Cole. She worked to the top of the box and fired a shot into the back of the net. Welch collected her team-leading sixth assist on Cole's goal.
Lukomski scored her first collegiate goal at 32:01 off a pass through the box from Bell. Lukomski snuck a shot into the bottom-right corner, giving Ferris State a 3-0 lead. Bell recorded her fifth assist.
Late in the half, at 43:57, Druelle scored her first collegiate goal to push FSU's lead to 4-0 before halftime. She worked past the Laker defense and fired a right-footed shot from the top of the box that bounced off the left post and into the net. Reese Carmody assisted, and the Bulldogs took a big lead into halftime.
Bell scored the first two goals of the second half and pushed FSU's advantage to 6-0 in the outing. She scored at 55:28 after Avery Sikorski sent a deep pass downfield that Bell gathered and shot past Herrera. Sikorski collected her first career point with an assist on Bell's second goal of the year.
Then, at 68:11, Bell took a shot that was saved by Herrera, but the rebound went right back to Bell and she buried the follow-up shot for her second goal of the afternoon, giving FSU a 6-0 lead with just over 20 minutes to play.
Buchan scored her first collegiate goal at 81:16 with Juliana Bernal getting her first assist of the year. Bernal passed to Buchan who faked a right-footed shot, worked around two Roosevelt defenders and took a left-footed shot into the bottom-left corner, sealing a 7-0 win for the Bulldogs.
For the game, FSU attempted a season-high 46 total shots, had a season-best 23 shots on goal and took 13 corner kicks.
Both Kubacki and Griffin made two saves each for the Bulldogs. It was the sixth shutout of the year for Ferris State.
Fuller led the squad with four shots on goal in 55 minutes of action. Allison McMahon played a team-high 83 minutes, while Bella Vallone and Bell each had three shots on goal.
Ferris State will conclude its regular season with two games at home next weekend. Wisconsin-Parkside comes to Big Rapids Thursday (Nov. 7) for a 1 p.m. (ET) kickoff at the Bulldog Soccer Field. FSU will play its regular season finale Saturday (Nov. 9) against Purdue Northwest. Kickoff is set for 11 a.m. (ET) against the Pride.
