Ferris State's Nick Huckabay & Carley Dubbert Earn Fall GLIAC Commissioners Award Recognition

Big Rapids, Mich. - A pair of Ferris State University student-athletes have earned the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Commissioners Award for the fall 2017 campaign, according to an announcement made Friday by the league office.
Senior linebacker Nick Huckabay (Montrose) of the Bulldog football squad and junior Carley Dubbert (St. Joseph) of the FSU women's soccer team both received the prestigious distinction.
The awards are presented after the Fall, Winter, and Spring athletic seasons to six female and six male student-athletes that excel both in the classroom and on the fields of play. All grade-point averages are based on a 4.0 scale.
The six female student-athletes recipients included: Carley Dubbert (Ferris State), Gabriella Mencotti (Grand Valley State), Gina Patterson (Grand Valley State), Shannon Quinn (Grand Valley State), Kameron Burmeister (Northern Michigan), Madison Whitehead (Northern Michigan).
The six male honorees were: Dominic Giunta (Ashland), Brogan Shrimpton (Davenport), Nick Huckabay (Ferris State), Nick Keizer (Grand Valley State), Collin Schlosser (Grand Valley State), James Ngandu (Tiffin).
Huckabay capped off an impressive career for the Bulldogs by leading FSU to the NCAA Division II National Quarterfinals for the second-straight year this past fall. The veteran linebacker ranked as the team's leading tackler with 99 stops, including 11 tackles for loss as a leader on one of the country's top defensive units. He posted 10 tackles or more in four games, including a personal career-high 20 stops in his final game in a Bulldog uniform in the NCAA Playoffs.
This past fall, Huckabay earned All-GLIAC honors for the third time in his career and was also named to the GLIAC All-Academic Excellence Team for the third consecutive season. A team captain, he helped FSU win 11 games or more for the fourth-straight year, which marks the best stretch in school hsitory. In his career, he was a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-District choice and also earned CoSIDA D2 Academic All-America honors as a Bulldog.
A four-year starter, the Montrose native finished his FSU career with 339 career tackles, which ranks 12th on the school's all-time leaders list. He helped FSU to a four-year league and state-best 45-7 overall record and was an all-region choice in his collegiate career as the Bulldogs made four-straight NCAA Playoff appearances. He was also active in the program's community service efforts such as helping with freshmen move-in, reading to elementary children and more. Huckabay posted a 3.83 cumulative grade point average in lean systems management.
Dubbert ranked as the Bulldogs' leading scorer in 2017 as the Bulldog women's soccer squad reached the GLIAC Tournament for the third-straight year and narrowly missed receiving the program's first-ever NCAA postseason berth. Dubbert tallied a personal career-high 21 points with a team-leading nine goals and three assists in 19 outings.
As a junior, the St. Joseph product produced four game-winning goals and ranked among the league's scoring leaders. She had a squad-best 64 total shots and posted personal career-highs in goals, points and game-winners while serving as a team captain.
A two-time GLIAC All-Academic Excellence Team honoree, Dubbert has been a standout performer both on the field and in the classroom as evidenced by her 3.98 grade point average in biology and pre-pharmacy. She's also been active in the program's community servivce projects and garnered All-GLIAC honors for the second time in her career this past fall. The Bulldogs have ranked among the nation's top academic teams and also have earned the NSCAA Ethics & Sportsmanship Award during her collegiate career.
