Ferris State Ranks Among League Leaders With Nearly 300 GLIAC All-Academic Picks

Big Rapids, Mich. - Nearly 300 Ferris State University student-athletes have garnered Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) All-Academic or All-Academic Excellence Team honors for the recently-completed 2020-21 athletics season.

The GLIAC All-Academic and All-Academic Excellence Teams are presented by Meijer and were announced by the league office this week.

Overall, a total of 295 Bulldog student-athletes from FSU's 16 NCAA Division II programs that compete in the GLIAC garnered recognition, ranking FSU among the top schools in the league based on the total number of honorees. FSU had an impressive 204 student-athletes tabbed to the GLIAC All-Academic Excellence squad with another 91 garnering all-academic laurels.

A total of 2,622 student-athletes from across the GLIAC achieved academic recognition, including 1,070 on the All-Academic Team and 1,552 on the Academic Excellence List.

Criteria states the student-athlete must be an active member on the roster at the end of the season, not a freshman or a first-year transfer student. All-Academic Teams are comprised of those student-athletes that meet criteria and carry a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0-3.49. Academic Excellence Teams are comprised of student-athletes that have a cumulative GPA of 3.50-4.0.

Typically, the all-academic teams are announced at the conclusion of the respective fall, winter and spring sports seasons, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic this year and non-typical schedules for several sports, all were announced at one time.

The Bulldogs' 295 honorees including representatives from all 16 D2 sports with women's soccer leading the way with 33 individuals recognized. All 16 teams garnered at least seven honorees. The sports represented included soccer (33), women's indoor track (32), women's outdoor track (32), football (25), men's indoor track (23), men's outdoor track (23), softball (22), women's cross country (20), men's cross country (17), volleyball (15), women's basketball (12), men's basketball (10), women's golf (9), women's tennis (8), men's tennis (7) and men's golf (7).

Previously, the Bulldog men's ice hockey squad also ranked among the leaders in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association this past season with 16 individuals tabbed to the WCHA All-Academic squad and 12 who earned WCHA Scholar-Athlete status.
