This Week In Bulldog Athletics - Jan. 23, 2024

 

The Bulldog women's basketball team notched a weekend home sweep this past week, beating West Michigan rival Davenport 92-52 on Thursday night before a big 71-65 triumph over archrival and nationally top-ranked Grand Valley State on Saturday at Wink Arena. The win over GVSU lifted FSU to 12-2 overall and a first-place tie atop the league at 6-1 in conference play. Ferris State's Kadyn Blanchard and Mallory McCartney were named the GLIAC Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively. The Bulldogs also moved up to #7 in this week's WBCA D2 National Rankings. Ferris State visits Wayne State on Thursday night & Saginaw Valley State on Saturday afternoon this week. 

 

The Bulldog men's basketball squad also recorded a weekend sweep, topping Davenport 90-61 on Thursday evening and rival Grand Valley State 86-73 on Saturday afternoon. The 'Dawgs are now 15-3 overall and in second place in the GLIAC behind Northern Michigan with a 5-2 conference record. FSU visits Wayne State this Thursday evening before heading to Saginaw Valley State on Saturday afternoon. The Bulldogs will then return home to host Northern Michigan and Michigan Tech on Feb. 1 and Feb. 3, respectively.  Ferris State is ranked #13 this week in the NABC D2 Top 25 poll.

 

The Bulldog men's ice hockey team swept Lake Superior State in a CCHA home-and-home series over the weekend, beating the Lakers 5-3 on Friday night in Big Rapids before a 3-2 overtime win on Saturday night in Sault Ste. Marie. FSU's Travis Shoudy recorded the game-winner on Saturday only 48 seconds into overtime and earned the CCHA Defenseman of the Week award. The 'Dawgs head to Sioux Falls, S.D., this weekend to face CCHA newcomer Augustana on Friday and Saturday at the new Midco Arena, which opens this weekend. Ferris State is then back at home on Feb. 2-3 versus Bowling Green at the Ewigleben Ice Arena.

 

The Ferris State men's and women's indoor track and field squads competed last week with strong results in the Saginaw Valley State Doug Hansen Open on Friday in University Center. This week, FSU heads to the Bill Clinger Classic on Friday hosted by Grand Valley State in Allendale.

 

The Bulldog men's and women's tennis teams hit the court last week as both teams took on NCAA Division I Western Michigan in Kalamazoo for exhibition matches with the men falling 6-1 and the women dropping a 7-0 decision. The Bulldog women will compete again on Sunday at NCAA D1 Eastern Michigan in another exhibition tilt.
