This Week In Ferris State Athletics - March 12, 2024

The Bulldog men's basketball squad captured the program's sixth GLIAC Tournament Championship over the weekend, beating archrival Grand Valley State 87-76 in the title game on Sunday in Marquette. Ferris State earned its 17th all-time NCAA Tournament berth and will take on Northern Michigan in the NCAA D2 Midwest Regional Quarterfinals on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. in Indianapolis. The regional semifinals are Sunday night with the title game on Tuesday evening. FSU, seeded fifth in the region field, is now 25-7 overall to date this year.

 

The Bulldog women's basketball squad fell to Northern Michigan 63-56 on Saturday in the GLIAC Tournament Semifinals in Allendale. The Bulldogs will head back to Allendale for the NCAA D2 Midwest Regional this week, facing Lewis (Ill.) in the quarterfinal-round on Friday at noon inside the Grand Valley State Fieldhouse. The regional semifinals take place on Saturday night with the finale on Monday evening. The Bulldogs are the region's third seed and own a 22-5 mark this year. It will be FSU's seventh all-time trip to the NCAA Tournament.

 

The Bulldog men's ice hockey team had its season come to a close over the weekend as the Bulldogs fell in the opening round of the CCHA Playoffs at top-seeded Bemidji State. Ferris State started strong and led much of the game on Friday night before a heart-breaking 5-4 overtime setback versus the Beavers. BSU then took game two by a 4-0 score, ending FSU's campaign. It marked the Bulldogs' 40th all-time postseason hockey playoff appearance.

 

The Bulldog Softball team wrapped up its annual trip to Florida with an 8-4 overall record last week at the USSSA Space Coast Spring Games in the Sunshine State. Ferris State won each of its final two games on Saturday at the event. The Bulldogs will host Lewis (Ill.) in their 2024 home opener on Tuesday, March 19, at the FSU Softball Field, starting at 1 pm and 3 pm for the non-league twinbill.

 

The Bulldog Tennis teams both posted identical 4-3 neutral site regional wins over Rockhurst (Mo.) on Saturday as they concluded their annual spring break trips against strong competition near Orlando. FSU returns home to host Tiffin on Friday and Walsh on Saturday in both men's and women's non-conference action at the FSU Racquet and Fitness Center.

                               

The Bulldog men's and women's golf teams started the season strong over the weekend, taking part in the Sacred Heart Spring Invite in Florida. The men earned runner-up honors while the women came in fifth in a NCAA Division I field. Both teams compete this weekend at the Saginaw Valley State Spring Invite being held in Kentucky along with the Findlay Spring Invite for the women on March 18-19.

 

The Ferris State football team opens spring practice this Friday (March 15) and will hold 15 practices over the course of the spring, including the annual Crimson & Gold Spring Game set for Friday, April 19. More information will be coming soon.
