Ferris State Women's Volleyball Gives Back To The Community

Mother Theresa always said "Let no one ever come to you without leaving better and happier" and 2010-11 Ferris State University women's volleyball team's student-athletes heed those words through their involvement in the Big Rapids (Mich.) community.

The FSU women's volleyball student-athletes have spent this spring semester by volunteering their time at the Metron Nursing Home and Riverview Elementary School.

“Our residents love having the team here, they enjoy having people to spend time with,” said Charles Hughes, a Metron representative.

Metron of Big Rapids is a residential nursing facility that offers high quality medical care, nutrition, therapy and activities for their residents. When the student-athletes volunteer at Metron they are assigned different activities to do with the residents, including manicures or games of bingo.

"Connecting with the community is important to our team," said sophomore Lindsey Miller (Granger, Ind./Mishawaka Penn).  "Our involvement not only bonds our team but helps us generate support of our program from those in the Big Rapids community."

The children at Riverview Elementary are always excited when the Bulldog women's volleyball student-athletes spend time with them.  The volunteering efforts are used reading to kids, assisting with their math assignments and also helping kids who have missed various class projects.  

“Kids love to have one-on-one attention,” said Mrs. Majorie Kirinovic, a second grade teacher at Riverside Elementary.  "When college students do come into our classroom and share their time it is wonderful.

This is the first semester that the volleyball student-athletes have had a continuous community involvement effort.

 This effort shows commitment from the student-athletes to the Big Rapids community.
