Bell Runs Past The Bulldogs In GLIAC Action
Detroit, Mich. - Wayne State running back Joique Bell proved to
be too much for the Ferris State University football team as the
Warriors rolled to a 45-7 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic
Conference (GLIAC) victory on Saturday (Oct. 17) afternoon at Adams
Field in Detroit, Mich.
Bell ran for 263 yards on 34 carries and scored six touchdowns to
lead Wayne State to its first home field win over the Bulldogs
since 1990, which snapped a seven-game Bulldog series' winning
streak in the Motor City.
The Warriors drove 65 yards in 11 plays on the first possession of
the game to find paydirt as Bell scored from 13 yards away with
9:20 to go in the first period.
Wayne State struck again with 3:28 left in the opening quarter as
Bell scored from 19 yards out after an 82-yard drive to make it
14-0 in favor of the Warriors.
WSU then took advantage of a costly Bulldog fumble and Bell
rambled in from the one-yard line with 22 seconds left in the first
frame to make it 21-0 after one quarter.
The Warriors tacked on another touchdown run from Bell early in
the second quarter from one yard away to give WSU a 28-0 advantage
following a 58-yard drive.
Ferris' only points of the day came with 4:23 to go in the first
half on a four-yard scoring pass from senior quarterback
Kyle Parrish to senior receiver Chris
Wilson. The short 33-yard march came on the heels'
of a Bell fumble.
WSU added a field goal on the final play of the opening half as
Anthony Morasso connected from 44-yards way to give the Warriors a
31-7 edge at intermission.
Wayne State added two more touchdowns from Bell in the second
half. His first came with 13:10 left in the third on a
33-yard run with the second wrapping up the scoring with only 13:58
remaining on a five-yard run.
The Warriors rolled up 30 first downs and 510 total yards on 72
plays with 398 yards coming on the ground on 58 carries.
FSU finished with 100 total yards and seven first downs as the
Bulldogs were limited to -45 yards rushing on 28 attempts as WSU
netted 10 quarterback sacks for 95 yards.
Tyler Thomas paced the Bulldogs offensively with
60 rushing yards while Parrish was seven-of-12 in the air for 85
yards. Junior receiver Matt Schuelke caught
four passes for 40 yards and Wilson hauled in three catches for 46
yards.
Senior linebacker Matt Ryan paced the Bulldogs
defensively with a game-high 20 tackles, including seven solo
stops.
Ferris State dropped to 1-7 overall and 0-7 in the GLIAC while WSU
improved to 6-2 overall and 5-2 in league play.
The game was halted twice due to a pair of unfortunate
injuries. WSU sophomore safety Jeremy Jones had to be carted
from the field in the second quarter after a helmet-to-helmet
hit. Ferris sophomore back David Freeman
also had to leave the field in the fourth quarter following a big
hit by the Warriors on a fourth down play. Both players were
taken from the field by stretchers in an ambulance as a
precautionary measure.
FSU continues its two-game league road swing by visiting the
Northwood Timberwolves next Saturday, Oct. 24, for a 12 p.m. (EDT)
league tilt in Midland, Mich.
