FSU Drops GLIAC Road Contest To Huskies

Houghton, Mich. - Michigan Tech University kept its series' win streak alive against the Ferris State University football team on Saturday (Nov. 5) afternoon as the Huskies pulled out a 41-14 victory over the Bulldogs at Sherman Field.

The victory was the ninth consecutive triumph for MTU over FSU and came before a Husky Senior Day home crowd on a sunny day in Houghton.

The Huskies' controlled the football and time of possession as they controlled the clock for more than 40 minutes to only 19:39 for Ferris State.  That helped MTU roll up 447 yards of total offense, including 236 on the groud.  Michigan Tech also held the Bulldogs to only 274 yards offensively and 41 yards on the ground on 27 carries.

Michigan Tech started the scoring by moving 66 yards in 12 plays on its opening possession of the game to take a 7-0 lead on Akeem Cason's two-yard scoring run.

The Bulldogs tied up the game at the end of the first period as senior running back Dwayne Williams scored from two yards away to finish a 10-play Bulldog drive that covered 65 yards.

MTU had a big second quarter to take control and the scoring started at 11:59 of the frame when Dan Perrault recovered a blocked punt in the endzone for a Husky score to make it 14-7 in favor of Michigan Tech.

The Huskies increased their lead to 20-7 when Cedrick Barber rambled in from 10 yards out at 8:04 of the second to help finish a 42-yard march in six plays.

Michigan Tech's lead grew to 27-7 at halftime as Bryan Lachapelle hauled in a six-yard TD pass from Tyler Scarlett with only 3:50 left in the half as MTU drove 60 yards in six plays.

The Huskies scored the only points of the third period when Cason sprinted 45-yards to paydirt to make it 34-7 with 11:08 to go in the frame.

In the fourth quarter, MTU pushed its edge to 41-7 as Matt Curtin caught a nine-yard scoring pass from Scarlett with 14:54 to play.  The Huskies needed only 41 yards and eight plays to find the endzone.

Ferris State scored the final points of the afternoon with 13:42 left when Williams scored from three yards out as FSU marched 69 yards in three plays.

Senior quarterback Tom Schneider paced FSU by completing 17-of-31 passes for 233 yards, but was sacked three times.  Five of his completions went to senior receiver Mike Ryan for 136 yards with Williams catching four passes for 28 yards.  Redshirt freshman Jamaal Jackson led FSU on the ground with five carries for 19 yards.

On the opposite side, Cason ran for 117 yards on 17 carries with two TD's for Michigan Tech and Barber had 63 yards on 19 attempts to go with a score.

Scarlett completed 21-of-27 balls for 211 yards and two touchdowns for the Huskies.

Junior linebacker Tayo Moss paced FSU defensively with 16 total tackles, including 11 solo stops.  Junior linebacker Alex Brajak chipped in with 10 tackles while Ian Coughlin led Michigan Tech with 10 tackles as well.

Ferris State dropped to 5-5 overall and 4-5 in the GLIAC with the setback while Michigan Tech improved to 6-4 overall and 5-4 in conference play.

FSU will host Northwood in its season finale on Saturday, Nov. 12, at FSU's Top Taggart Field.  It will be "Dog Day" with fans encouraged to bring their dogs to the game and the Bulldogs will honor their senior class prior to kickoff.
