Muskegon CC's Matt Stoll Joins FSU Hoops

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's basketball squad has added yet another player to its program as West Michigan native Matt Stoll (Kent City/Muskegon CC) has announced his intentions to join the Bulldogs for the 2012-13 campaign.

The 6-7 Stoll has spent the past two seasons in the junior college ranks at Muskegon Community College where he played under former FSU Assistant Coach Dave Schlump.

"We're ecstatic about bringing in one of Coach Schlump's players," said FSU head coach Bill Sall.  "Matt's really developed his game in two seasons at Muskegon and is coming off a great season.

"He's ready to make that next step and become a Bulldog after getting bigger and stronger the last two years," he added.

Stoll earned All-Michigan Community College Athletic Association (MCCAA) Western Conference Second Team accolades after pacing the Jayhawks in rebounding and blocked shots as a sophomore in 2011-12.  He averaged 12.1 points, 10.5 rebounds and 3.4 blocks per contest.

"It's long been a goal of Matt's to play at Ferris State and thru hard work, he's able to realize that dream," Sall said.  "We expect him to probably redshirt next season, and with a year of added experience, he has the ability to be a solid contributor in his final two seasons of collegiate basketball."

Stoll earned team Most Valuable Player Award recognition for Muskegon Community College this past season after scoring 377 points and pulling down 326 rebounds in 31 games.  He shot nearly 50% from the floor as MCC posted a 22-9 overall record and reached the regional semifinals under Schlump's direction.

As a prep player, Stoll was chosen to play in the Champions of Character All-Star Basketball Classic.  He was a two-year starter for the Eagles and competed in both basketball and baseball.  Stoll earned Muskegon Chronicle All-Area accolades as a prep senior. Additionally, he worked as a bat boy for the Midwest League's West Michigan Whitecaps during his high school career.  

A Dean's List Award honoree at Muskegon CC last fall, Stoll's also a cousin of two former Bulldog players out of Kent City in both Cory Anderson and Adam Anderson.  Cory served as the Bulldogs' top assistant coach following his playing career in the late 1990's until 2010. 

"Matt's a good student who comes from a great family and he'll be a tremendous addition to our program," said Sall.

Ferris State ended the 2011-12 campaign with a 16-11 overall record after winning a share of a second-straight GLIAC North Division Championship with a 13-6 league mark.

The Bulldogs also made their 13th all-time GLIAC Tournament berth this past year, including the program's fourth-straight conference tournament appearance and seventh bid in the last eight years.

Additionally, Ferris State's 16 wins this campaign marked the 10th consecutive year in which the Bulldogs had won 10 or more games.  It is also the third year in a row in which FSU has won at least 16 games and the fifth time the Bulldogs have done so in 10 years under Sall's direction.  

In Sall's Bulldog head coaching tenure, Ferris State has won four league titles and made three trips to the NCAA Tournament.
