Ferris State Hockey Claims Top Statistical Honor

The 2009-10 Ferris State University men's ice hockey team will have a number-one ranking attached to its name as the Bulldogs have been crowned the 2010 NCAA Division I statistical champion for penalty-killing percentage as announced by the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA). 

The Bulldogs registered a national-best .884 penalty-kill percentage among the 58 teams in the NCAA-I ranks.  As a result of the top team statistical honor, Ferris State will be receiving a plaque for its accomplishment.  FSU went 190-for-215 in penalty-kill situations and finished just ahead of second-place Air Force, which compiled an 88.2% efficiency rate (149-169). 

Among the other 2009-10 season final statistical category leaders, Ferris State placed sixth in scoring defense (2.30 gpg.) and combined special teams efficiency (53.1%), ninth in penalty minutes (17.5 pgp.), 12th in scoring margin (0.65 margin), 13th in team winning percentage (.600), 19th in power-play efficiency (19.2%), and 28th in scoring offense (2.95 gpg.). 

Individually, sophomore goaltender Taylor Nelson (Regina, Saskatchewan) ranked fifth in goalie winning percentage (.700), 20th in save percentage (.915), and 21st in goals-against average (2.47).  Junior netminder Pat Nagle (Bloomfield) was sixth in save percentage (.923), ninth in goals-against average (2.13), and 28th in goalie winning percentage (.540).  Senior center Casey Haines' (Indiana, Pa.) five game-winning goals ranked seventh and senior left wing Blair Riley (Kamloops, British Columbia) was 10th in short-handed lamplighters with a 2.0 average.       

The Bulldogs, under head coach Bob Daniels, wrapped up their 31st season of competition at the NCAA Division I level with a 21-13-6 overall record and a third-place 13-9-6-4 mark (49 league points) in CCHA play.  The 21 wins represents a tie for the fourth-highest single-season victories total in the program's history.

Ferris State concluded the 2009-10 campaign ranked 13th in the nation by U.S. College Hockey Online, 14th by USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine and 15th in the Inside College Hockey.com's poll.
