FSU Hockey Ties LSSU In OT & Drops Shootout

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's ice hockey team battled to a 1-1 overtime draw and fell in a shootout decision against Lake Superior State in Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) action on Saturday evening (Nov. 12) at the Ewigleben Ice Arena in Big Rapids.

Per CCHA rules, the Bulldogs come away from the night with one point. They currently stand at 9-2-1 overall and are 5-2-1 in conference play. The shootout win awards the Lakers two points on the evening and they end the weekend at 8-3-1 overall and 5-2-1-(1) in the CCHA.

Previously, nationally eighth-ranked Ferris State won Friday's (Nov. 11) series' opener against the 11th-ranked Lakers by a 5-1 score.

Ferris State junior Kyle Bonis (Lindsay, Ontario) opened up the scoring at 15:59 into the first period for the Bulldogs. Bonis' seventh goal of the season was an even-strength tally, with assists going to freshman defenseman Jason Binkley (Powell, Ohio) and senior defenseman Michael Trebish (Yorktown, Saskatchewan).

However, only 18 seconds later, at 16:17 of the first, Laker junior Domenic Monardo tallied an even-strength goal to make the score 1-1 on the night. The score remained tied through the next 40-plus minutes of regulation and a five-minute sudden death overtime.

Lake Superior State was the first to shoot in the shootout and Ben Power slipped one past the goaltender's right shoulder. Both Monardo and Kyle Jean missed their shootout attempts for the Lakers. All three Bulldogs, including Chad Billins, Derek Graham and Jordie Johnston, were unable to convert on their shootout opportunities.

Freshman goaltender CJ Motte (St. Claire) received a tie in net, bringing his record to 3-1-1 overall. He stopped 16 Laker shots, including six in the first, five in the second, two in the third and three in the overtime stanza. The Lakers' sophomore netminder, Kevin Kaplaka, also received a tie and now holds a 7-3-1 record. Kapalka made 32 saves with a game-high 11 in the third.

Neither team was able to convert on power-play opportunities. The Lakers were 0-8 and the Bulldogs were blanked at 0-5 for the contest. LSSU served 14 minutes in the penalty box on minor penalties. FSU saw 20 minutes in the box on 10 infractions.

Ferris State will travel to Alaska next weekend (Nov. 18-19) to take on the Nanooks in a two-game road conference series. The puck will drop at 11:35 p.m. (ET) in both contests on Friday and Saturday night in Fairbanks, Alaska.
