Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's ice hockey team fell in a 4-2 road decision against the University of Vermont Catamounts in a non-conference game on Friday afternoon (Dec. 30) evening in the Sheraton/TD Bank Catamount Cup Tournament played at the Gutterson Fieldhouse in Burlington, Vt.

The Catamounts got on the board first as Michael Paliotta scored on a power-play opportunity 9:51 into the game. They struck again with just 2:22 left in the period as Tobias Nilsson-Roos netted a even-strength goal making the score 2-0 in favor of UVM.

The Bulldogs posted their first goal of the game early in the second period as sophomore right wing Justin DeMartino (Macomb) found the back of the net to tally his first goal of the season. Sophomore defender Scott Czarnowczan (Macomb) and junior forward Eric Alexander (Kentwood) received the assists on the even-strength goal.

Vermont scored 12:18 into the second period for a two-goal lead as Kyle Reynolds found the back of the net.

Then, with 1:35 left in the second period, Bulldog senior forward Jordie Johnston (Rosetown, Saskatchewan) scored a power-play goal to get the Bulldogs within one goal of the Catamounts. Freshman defender Simon Denis (Burnaby, British Columbia) tallied the helper.

However, Vermont scored 10:45 into the third period as Colin Markison registered a power-play goal after he put the puck to the right of freshman goalie CJ Motte (St. Claire), who thought he had made the save.

FSU capitalized on one of four power-play opportunities. Vermont was able to find the back of the net three times in seven man-advantage situations. The Bulldogs served 16 penalty minutes on eight discretions, opposed to UVM's 10 minutes on five penalties.

Motte made 20 saves in the loss for Ferris State, including 10 in the second period. His record is currently 4-4-1 overall this season.

For the Catamounts, goaltender Rob Madore made 24 saves in the 60-minute stanza.

The Bulldogs will return home next weekend (Jan. 6-7) as they host Colgate in a non-conference series at the Ewigleben Ice Arena. Fans can buy tickets to Friday's 7:05 p.m. (EDT) contest for only $6 in advance as part of the "New Year's Special". The offer is not redeemable on the day of the game.
