Bulldogs Shutout Fighting Irish In 3-0 Win

Big Rapids, Mich.- The Ferris State University men's ice hockey team posted its fourth shutout of the season on Friday (Feb. 10) night in a 3-0 victory over the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. The Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) matchup was played at the Compton Family Ice Arena in South Bend, Ind.
The win brings the mationally fifth and sixth-ranked Bulldogs to a 19-8-4 overall record and a 14-6-4-(1) conference mark. It also extends the squad's unbeaten streak to 11-straight games (8-0-3), which is the longest current streak in college hockey. With the win, the Bulldogs gained three points in the conference and remain the top team in the league with 44 total points. The Fighting Irish fell to 16-12-3 overall and now own a 11-9-3 record in the CCHA.
After a scoreless first period, FSU junior forward Kyle Bonis (Lindsay, Ontario) scored the first two goals for the Bulldogs. He tallied his first lamp-lighter on the power play at the 9:07 mark of the second period. Bonis took the puck behind the net and went back door on the Notre Dame goalie. Senior forward Derek Graham (Schoolcraft) and junior forward Travis Ouellette (Windsor, Ontario) received the assists.
With just 22 seconds left in the second period, Bonis scored his second goal of the game and 15th of the season. He waited by the crease and took a clean pass from sophomore defenseman Scott Czarnowczan (Macomb) to pickup the goal. Ouellette tallied his second assist of the game on Bonis' even-strength goal.
Graham then scored the Bulldogs final goal of the game 5:38 into the third period. Senior defenseman Chad Billins (Marysville) and Bonis were awarded assists. Billins has now tallied a point in each of the Bulldogs' last eight games.
Senior netminder Taylor Nelson (Regina, Saskatchewan) earned his third shutout of the season as he stopped all 31 of Notre Dame's shots. On the other end of the ice, ND's Mike Johnson turned away 20 of the Bulldogs' 23 shots on goal.
Defensively, the Bulldogs totaled 19 blocked shots, including a game-high four each for freshman defenseman Jason Binkley (Powell, Ohio) and junior forward Eric Alexander (Kentwood).
FSU went 1-of-3 on the power play while holding ND to 0-of-4 with the man advantage. The Bulldogs totaled 10 penalty minutes on five penalties compared to Notre Dame's eight minutes in the box with four infractions.
The two squad's will conclude their home-and-home series on Saturday night (Feb. 11) at the Ewigleben Ice Arena in Big Rapids, Mich. The puck will drop at 7:08 p.m. (EDT) in front of a sold out crowd.
Saturday's contest will be broadcast live from Big Rapids by Comcast Television throughout the region and fans are encouraged to wear white as part of a "Whiteout" promotion. The first 800 Bulldog fans in attendance will also receive Thunderstix.
