Stein Stalls #20 Bemidji State In Thrilling Shootout Win

Bemidji, Minn. - The Ferris State University men's ice hockey team picked up shootout victory over the nationally #20-ranked Bemidji State Beavers on Friday (Nov. 4) at the Sanford Center in Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) action following a 2-2 tie.

Ferris State junior goaltender Logan Stein shut down the Beavers on a season best 44 stops, then slammed the door by stopping all three Bemidji State shootout attempts.

To start, at 15:25 of the opening frame, Ferris State got on the board at the end of a power play when Ferris State senior defenseman Blake Evennou (4) ripped a 150-foot seam pass from behind his own goal, finding the tape of freshman forward Tyler Schleppe. Schleppe buried a breakaway goal for a power play tally and his second goal of the campaign to give FSU a 1-0 edge.

Bemidji State answered at 16:22 when Mitchell Martan picked up a loose puck in front of the Bulldog bench and set up Ross Armour on a two-on-zero rush to tie the game at 1-1.

In the second period, the Beavers took their first lead at 3:36 when Irey buried a rebound chance to boost Bemidji State ahead 2-1.

Just over five minutes later, the Bulldogs scored the eventual game-tying goal again on the power play. Ferris State sophomore forward Brad Marek (6) and senior defenseman Brenden MacLaren (4) combined to set up junior forward Austin McCarthy's first collegiate goal at 8:52 of the second period, on a redirect at the top of the crease for a 2-2 tie.

While the Beavers rushed at the Bulldogs in the third frame, Stein turned aside the last 25 shots he saw, including one in overtime where the Bulldogs outshot the Beavers 6-1.

In the shootout, Ferris State missed on the first attempt, but were bouyed by Stein's stop of Lleyton Roed. Ferris State freshman forward Connor McGrath scored on the second attempt to move to a perfect 2-2 on the year in shootout attempts. Stein stopped Eric Martin and Mitchell Martan in succession to shut the door and pick up the extra CCHA point.

Ferris State finished 2-4 on the power play to run their season percentage to 25 percent (10-40). The Bulldogs remained disciplined and took just two penalties, holding Bemidji State 0-2 on the man advantage on the night.

In goal for the Beavers, Matthias Sholl made 25 saves in the tie while Stein made 44 stops on 46 shots.

Three more CCHA points are on the line Saturday (Nov. 5) as the Bulldogs wrap up the weekend series at #20 Bemidji State at 7:07 p.m. (ET).
