Ferris' Ahmet Demir Honored By The GLIAC

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has chosen Ferris State University senior men's tennis player Ahmet Demir as its Athlete of the Week Award recipient for his efforts last week.

Demir posted a combined 3-1 overall mark in two outings last week for the nationally 38th-ranked Bulldogs as FSU split a pair of conference home matches against two other nationally-ranked foes.  Ferris lost to 15th-ranked Northwood by a 6-3 count on Thursday (April 8) before coming back to beat 39th-ranked Wayne State with a 5-4 margin on Sunday (April 11).

In doubles play, Demir teamed up with freshman Arin Enge to record back-to-back wins at the third flight.  The duo topped Northwood's tandem of Julian Freese and Max Dutois by an 8-2 count before beating WSU's Oscar Gamarra and Kevin Turnbull 8-6.

Demir also split two singles matches, falling to NU’s Frederic Schoelzel by a 6-1, 6-1 score and then bouncing back to win a three-set tiebreaker versus Wayne State’s Britton Steele on Sunday in his final regular-season home match 6-1, 2-6, 6-2.

Demir is currently ranked 14th in the latest Campbell's Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II Midwest Region Singles Rankings.

He owns a 7-7 overall record to date this campaign in singles play and is 4-2 in GLIAC competition.  Demir and Enge maintain a 10-5 doubles mark, including a 6-0 record at the third flight.

Overall, Demir holds career marks of 37-21 (singles) and 29-26 (doubles) in his three seasons with the Bulldogs to date.

Demir attained second team All-GLIAC recognition for the second year in a row as a junior in 2008-09. He won five of his six GLIAC singles matches at the number two flight in the lineup a year ago and posted a 18-7 overall mark in individual play last year. He also teamed up with former Bulldog Lewis DeGeneault to post a 10-13 record in doubles action last season and the duo was ranked seventh in the Campbell's Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II Midwest Doubles Rankings.

The Ferris men’s tennis team presently holds a 9-6 overall record this season heading into Wednesday's (April 14) final regular-season conference match at Grand Valley State in Allendale, Mich.  The Bulldogs own a second-place 5-1 mark in GLIAC competition. FSU’s six losses this season have come against either NCAA Division I competition or higher nationally-ranked Division II teams.

The Bulldogs are presently listed fourth in the ITA Midwest Region under head coach Alex Palladino.

Following Wednesday's league road tilt at GVSU, the Bulldogs will next take part in the annual GLIAC Tournament slated for this Saturday and Sunday (April 17-18) in Midland, Mich.
