Marengo Reaches Singles Semifinals For FSU At ITA Regionals On Day Two

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's tennis team continued day two action on Saturday (Sept. 29) at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Midwest Regional Championships in Indianpolis, Ind.

In Flight A singles play, FSU's Tyler Marengo remained alive as he reached the semifinal round.  He topped Florian Boggia of Northwood 6-4, 6-4 in the round of 16 and then upset seventh-seeded Jean Menard of NU by a 4-6, 6-2, 10-7 score to reach Sunday's semifinals as one of four remaining competitors in the top flight.

The Bulldogs' sixth-seeded Sergiu Laza advanced to the quarterfinals after a 6-2, 6-2 win over Indianapolis' Luke Hubert, but then fell to third-seeded Roman Gonda of Drury (Mo.) in a close 6-7 (4), 6-4, 10-5 match.

Finally, in Flight A play, FSU's second-seeded Laurent Galarneau dropped his match in the round of 16 to Bellarmine's (Ky.) Anton Robinov 6-7, 7-6, 10-2. Robinov entered the tournament seeded 14th in the singles draw.

In Flight B singles, Ferris State's Aaron Dial fell to Alan Gardiner of Bellarmine by a 7-6 (7), 6-3 score in the quarterfinals.

The Bulldogs' doubles tandem of Galarneau and Laza fell in the quarterfinals by a score of 8-6 to the Rockhurst (Mo.) combination of Yassir El Ghazi and Truit Gray.

The Flight B doubles team of Dial and Marengo won their semifinal match 9-7 over Drury's Jorge Nadal and Jandui Reyes, but then suffered a 8-3 loss in the title match to Rodrigo Flores and Robert Nieters of Southern Indiana.

On Sunday, Marengo is slated to face Robinov in the semifinal round of singles competition as FSU's lone remaining competitor.  The winner will face either Gonda or top-seeded Andy Blair of Drury in the title match.

The tournament wraps up on Sunday in Indianapolis.
