Bulldog Men's Tennis Comes Up Short In GLIAC Tourney Title Match

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's tennis team came up just short in its quest to capture a second-straight Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Tournament Championship as the Bulldogs fell to rival Northwood by a 5-2 count on Sunday (April 21) morning in the league tournament title match at Midland.

The Bulldogs, who beat the Timberwolves in last year's league tournament final, trailed 2-1 after the doubles round and could not come back to post the win against the top-seeded Timberwolves at the Midland Community Tennis Center.

The Ferris State combination of Laurent Galarneau and Razvan Mag pulled out an 8-1 victory at first doubles, but NU won the second and third flights, including a close 9-8 (10-5) triumph at third doubles.

FSU's Sergiu Laza recorded a 6-2, 6-3 win at the second singles flight, however the Timberwolves swept the bottom three positions to close out the win with both first and third singles going unfinished.

Third-seeded Ferris State had beat sixth-seeded Tiffin 5-0 in Friday's (April 19) quarterfinals before upsetting second-seeded Wayne State in the semifinals on Saturday (April 20) to reach the tournament championship match.

FSU dropped to 15-5 overall this season with the setback while Northwood improved to 16-4 on the year.

The Bulldogs are currently ranked 34th nationally and were second in the Midwest Region heading into the conference tournament.

FSU will now await word on the official announcement of this year's NCAA Tournament selections, which will take place later this week coming week.
