Strong Start For Men's Tennis At ITA Midwest Regional Championships
Big Rapids, Mich. – The Ferris State University men's tennis squad opened action in the 2021 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Midwest Regional Championships with a strong performance on Friday in Allendale.
The Bulldogs had four players qualify for the main draw in the 64-team bracket out of more than 175 total participants from the 22 schools and all four won their first-round match. Three ultimately advanced to the final 16 by winning in the second round.
FSU also had a strong showing in doubles where a pair of teams both qualified for the top draw and won their first-round match to reach the round of 16.
In singles action, FSU's Mathis Guerre and Benjamin Lortie both compiled a 2-0 mark in the main draw as did Yannic Alexander Mader. The Bulldogs' Jan Koupil was 1-1 in the top draw.
In the B draw, the Bulldogs' Alessandro Santangelo went 2-0 with Josh McDermott and Ayush Deswal both posting 1-1 records.
Meanwhile, in doubles action, Guerre and Koupil teamed up for a win in the top draw as did Lortie and Mader. Dewsal and Alec Olivier were victorious in the C doubles draw with Santangelo and McDermott falling in their only encounter in the B division.
The ITA regional championships resume on Saturday morning with the event hosted by Grand Valley State University.
