Ferris State Tennis Teams Garner Sweep Over Walsh In Regional Action At Home

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University men's and women's tennis squads earned a regional home sweep on Friday (Feb. 18) as both Bulldog teams knocked off visiting Walsh inside the FSU Racquet and Fitness Center.

The Ferris State men's team started the day strong and moved to 4-0 on the year by beating Walsh 5-2 in the opening contest of the day. Meanwhile, the women's squad evened its mark at 2-2 on the year by rallying for a 4-3 win in the nightcap.

In the opener, the Bulldogs swept the doubles round in men's competition for the initial point of the match against the Cavaliers. Then, in singles play, Ferris State claimed the bottom four singles positions for the convincing win.

"It was a very solid day for both teams and the men came out strong in sweeping the doubles play," said FSU head coach Mark Doren. "Then, in singles, the depth of our team came up big after our top two players ran into some stiff competition."

In the final match, the Bulldog women's team fought back after an early deficit that saw them drop the doubles point. Ferris State battled back in singles play to win four of the six positions to garner the win.

"The women had a great match against a much-improved Walsh team," said Doren. "We lost our first doubles point, breaking our streak of 18 consecutive doubles points against D2 competition. However, they fought back and it was a huge match clinching win for Patricia Martin Gomez to finish a match that took four hours and 20 minutes to complete."

The Bulldogs will host Hillsdale in another regional showdown on Sunday (Feb. 20) with the women slated to take the court first at 10:30 a.m. (ET) followed by the men at 2:30 p.m. (ET) in Big Rapids.
