Ferris State Tennis Teams Open Year Strong At The Davenport Invitational
Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State men's and women's tennis squads opened the 2022-23 campaign over the weekend at the Davenport Invitational in the Grand Rapids area.
The event included student-athletes competing individually and in doubles action in various flights with competitors from Grand Valley State, Davenport, Northwood and Ferris State.
The Bulldogs had strong results overall with a number of players advancing in the bracket and finishing with winning records.
On the men's side, FSU's Benjamin Lortie and Jan Koupil both compiled 2-1 marks in the A Singles draw with Koupil taking third place overall. The Bulldogs' Alessandro Santangelo and Erik Kovacs both reached the finals in the B Singles bracket and each went 3-0 for the event.
Meanwhile, both Yannic Mader and Kevin Kovacs advanced to the semifinals in the C Bracket with Kacper Pasielak finishing as the runner-up with a 2-1 record in the men's D Singles division.
In doubles competition, the pairing of Mader and Pasielak reached the finals of the B Doubles division and went 2-1 as did the tandem of Andrew Swirczek and Kevin Kovacs.
The women's team also had a strong weekend with Sophie Daavettila earning a 2-1 record in the women's A Singles draw. Maria Fernanda Hernandez Ferrer went 2-1 and reached the semifinal round in the division.
FSU's Parker Nolan also went 2-1 while competing in the B Singles flight with Ana Sophia Hernandez Ferrer compiling a 2-0 record. Kennedy Dumas finished with a 2-1 ledger in C Singles competition and Amelia Laverdiere reached the semifinals with a 1-1 finish in the D bracket.
Finally, in women's doubles, the squad of Nolan and Daavettila reached the women's A Doubles finals and posted a 2-1 mark. Morgan Waller and Hernandez also went 2-1 in the division.
The Bulldog men's team will compete in the 2022 ITA Midwest Regional Championships Sept. 17-19 in Indianapolis. The women's ITA Midwest Regional will then take place Sept. 24-26 in Allendale.
