FSU's Amy Dunleavy Tabbed As Second Team Academic All-American

Big Rapids, Mich. - Ferris State University softball junior standout Amy Dunleavy (Canton) has been named to the 2013 Capital One Division II Academic All-America Second Team.

The 2013 Capital One Academic All-America Softball Teams recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom.  The teams are nominated and chosen by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Previously, Dunleavy was tabbed to the Academic All-District First Team, which made her eligible to receive Academic All-America laurels.

The Academic All-America selections consisted of 11 first-team honorees, 12 second-team picks and 11 third-team representatives.  Dunleavy was chosen as the lone designated player on the second team. 

She was among only two student-athletes from a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) school named to any of the three Academic All-America teams along with infielder Stacey Klonowski of Northwood, who was also a second-team pick.

To be eligible for Academic All-America® consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.

This season, Dunleavy was among the team's top performers in nearly every statistical category with 41 hits, 39 RBI's and a .313 batting average in 45 contests while earning All-GLIAC Second Team laurels. She also scored 31 runs, compiled a squad-high eight homers with five doubles and a triple. Additionally, she posted the squad's second-most pitching wins with an 8-4 overall record in 15 appearances along with a pair of complete games in 61.1 innings pitched.  Dunleavy split time this year at pitcher, third base and DP for the Bulldogs.

A year ago, Dunleavy was honored as a National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-Midwest Region Second Team selection for the 2012 campaign along with an All-GLIAC Second Team pick.

Dunleavy's efforts helped the Bulldogs compile a 29-16 overall record in 2013 in the initial campaign under head coach Marie Foster.  It marked the 10th consecutive year in which the Bulldogs won at least 24 games in a season.  FSU also finished as the GLIAC runner-up in regular-season play with a 20-6 league record.

The Bulldogs advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the eighth time in school history this year and it represented the Bulldogs' fifth trip to the postseason since 2005.

Capital One became the entitlement rights holder to CoSIDA's Academic All-America teams program in 2011.

Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 16,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.
