Ferris State Softball Earns First Victory In Split On Day One At The Spring Games

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University softball team split two games on Sunday (March 5) on its opening day of action at The Spring Games in Clermont, Fla.

The Bulldogs picked up their first victory of the season in the opening game with a 4-2 win over regional foe Urbana (Ohio) before suffering a close 3-2 setback to Bentley (Mass.) in the final game of the day.

In the opener, the Bulldogs struck for three runs in the bottom of the fourth to break a 1-1 tie and held off Urbana as the visitors could only manage a single run in their final at-bat. FSU totaled three hits in the victory.

FSU's hits in the game one win came from Casey Bias, Sarah Johnson and Emily Reed. Bias had two RBI's and Johnson added one for the Bulldogs.

In the circle, Sam Bates hurled all seven innings and gave up only two runs on two hits with five strikeouts and a walk.

In the second game, Bentley scored twice in the eighth inning to win the game after FSU had broke a 1-1 deadlock with a run in the top half of the extra inning. The Bulldogs outhit Bentley 8-5 in the setback.

Ferris State got two hits each from Alexx Astorga, Logan Fleming and Jacki Stone in the nightcap. Astorga doubled while both Fleming and Stone each drove in a run for the Bulldogs.

Abby Highway pitched game two for Ferris State and gave up two runs on five hits in seven and two-thirds innings of action.

Ferris State will play two more games on Monday (March 6) as FSU faces St. Joseph's (Ind.) at 1 p.m. (ET) before meeting Lewis (Ill.) in a 3:30 p.m. (ET) game.

Overall, the Bulldogs will play a total of 12 contests in the Sunshine State over their annual spring break.
