HOME SWEEP! Bulldog Softball Beats Wayne State To Open Six-Game Weekend Homestand

Highlights & Postgame

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University softball team notched a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) home sweep on Friday (April 29) as the Bulldogs defeated Wayne State in back-to-back games to begin a six-game weekend homestand at the FSU Softball Complex.

Ferris State scored three runs in the fifth inning of game one to rally back for a 3-2 win and kept the momentum going with a strong start in game two en route to an impressive 12-0 triumph in five innings of action.

With the two wins, the Bulldogs moved past the Warriors into the sixth spot in terms of seeding for the upcoming GLIAC Tournament with four regular-season games to play. FSU has now won four of its last five outings overall with the lone setback coming by a single run.

In the opener, Wayne State broke the scoreless deadlock with a single run in the third and added one more in the fourth for a 2-0 lead. However, the Bulldogs responded in the fifth by scoring three runs to grab the advantage with the go-ahead runs produced by a two RBI single from sophomore Josie Prince.

Along with Prince's two runs batted in, the Bulldogs also got an RBI from centerfielder Paige Kortz. Outfielder Kylie Winkels produced two hits as part of FSU's eighth-hit outing. Shortstop Kacey Bouche doubled for the Bulldogs.

FSU freshman Kristina Baar opened the game and tossed the first three innings for the Bulldogs, giving up only two runs on two hits with four walks and three strikeouts. Junior Kristie Gray earned the win by throwing four scoreless innings, allowing only three hits with one walk and one strikeout.

In game two, the Bulldogs took control early, scoring three times in the first inning before adding nine runs in the second. Overall, FSU pounded out 10 hits to six for the Warriors.

Bulldog left fielder Abby Mitchell hit a grand slam homer in the second for the Bulldogs and led FSU with four RBI's. Prince drove in two runs as did catcher Ali Magiera in addition to RBI's from Winkels and Kaitlyn Orme.

First baseman Evelyn Blood had two hits and scored three runs in the game, including a trip around the bases in the second when she hit a shot to center field that rolled past the outfielder. Prince and Magiera also both had two hits for FSU while Piage Kortz scored twice.

Sophomore Aryn Gallacher earned the win in game two, pitching all five innings while posting the shutout victory. She allowed no runs on six hits with four strikeouts and a walk.

The Bulldogs will be back in action at home on Saturday (April 30) as they host Saginaw Valley State in a GLIAC doubleheader starting with first pitch for game one at 1 p.m. (ET) and game two set to follow at approximately 3 p.m. (ET).

Saturday will also be Senior Day with FSU slated to honor seniors Paige Kortz, Ali Magiera and Abby Mitchelson following the twin bill. The Bulldogs honored fellow senior pitcher Kaitlyn Nugent as part of Friday's activities and she threw out the first pitch prior to the contest.
