Ferris State Drops GLIAC Tourney Opener To Purdue Northwest

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University softball team built an early lead, but could not hold on in a 14-7 setback to Purdue Northwest in the opening day of action Thursday (May 4) at the 2023 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Tournament at Rosemont, Ill.

With the setback, the Bulldogs will face sixth-seeded Parkside on Friday (May 5) with first pitch set for 2:30 p.m. (ET) at the Parkway Bank Sports Complex, needing a win to stay alive in the double-elimination league tourney.

Ferris State built a 6-3 lead in the game heading to the bottom of the fourth inning and still led 7-5 going into the second half of the fifth before the Pride exploded for eight runs in the bottom to eventually garner the win. The setback came despite the fact FSU outhit PNW 11-9 for the afternoon.

Third baseman Brooklyn Verbeek had three hits in the outing for FSU while Catherine O'Donohue netted two hits. Both also drove in two runs each and Josie Prince scored twice in the contest. FSU got doubles off the sticks of Prince, Verbeek and Amara Zukowski.

A combination of five different Bulldog pitchers combined to allow four earned runs on nine hits with seven walks and three strikeouts.
