Ferris State Softball Notches Sunday Night Sweep In First Action In Florida

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University softball team opened action on Sunday (March 3) night at the USSSA Space Coast Spring Games near Orlando with a sweep in day one competition on the squad's annual spring break trip to the Sunshine State.

In the opening game, the Bulldogs beat Wilmington (Del.) by an 8-6 score, totaling 13 hits overall in the victory. Ferris State then jumped in front early in game two before rallying from a three-run deficit to produce a walk-off victory in the bottom of the seventh for an 8-7 win over Walsh.

FSU scored six times in the first inning of game one and never trailed in the decision, adding single run-in the third and the fifth innings.

The Bulldogs got three hits apiece from right fielder Abby Meyer along with designated player Catherine O'Donohue. Both second baseman Jadyn Joseph and first baseman Alexis Kozlowski had two hits each while Macy Verbeek drove in two runs for FSU with a hit and two walks.

O'Donohue tripled in the triumph while Kozlowski, Emma Gillard along with both Brooklyn and Macy Verbeek doubled in the game. Gillard added a pair of steals and five different Bulldog players knocked in runs overall.

In the circle, Aryn Gallacher tossed three and one-third innings, limiting Wilmington to two earned runs on five hits with a strikeout. Ashley Webb threw one and two-thirds innings of work with a single hit allowed while Izzy Regner gave up only a single run on one hit with three strikeouts and a walk in two innings of action.

In the nightcap, Walsh rallied for the win after FSU jumped out to a 4-0 lead with a run in both the second and third innings followed by two more in the fourth. The Cavaliers put their first four runs on the board in the fifth to tie the game up and added three runs in the top of the seventh to grab a three-run advantage.

However, FSU answered with three runs to knot the game up and loaded the bases before Abby Meyer registered the game-winning hit with a single to left field to give FSU the walk-off victory. Overall, both teams had eight hits in the contest.

Brooklyn Verbeek had four hits for FSU and scored three runs with two RBI's while Kozlowski notched a pair of hits Maddie Gkekas produced three RBI's and drew two walks. Catcher Emily Killion also had a hit in the game along with Meyer.

O'Donohue threw four and one-third innings in game two with two earned runs allowed on four hits while striking out five and walking two. Regner threw two and two-thirds innings, giving up one earned run on four hits with both two walks and two strikeouts.

Ferris State returns to action on Monday (March 4) with a doubleheader against Walsh starting at 12:15 p.m. (ET) for the opener and 2:30 p.m. (ET) for game two at the Space Coast Spring Games.
