Late Exhibition Rally Comes Up Short For FSU

Rochester, Mich. – The Ferris State University women’s basketball team fell behind early, but battled back late in dropping a 60-50 exhibition decision to NCAA Division I Oakland on Sunday (Nov. 1) afternoon at the Athletics Center O’Rena in Rochester, Mich.

The Golden Grizzlies sprinted out of the gates quickly and led by as many as 29 points (38-9) with 5:18 remaining in the opening half. The Bulldogs closed the half on a 6-2 run to pull within 25 points (40-15) at halftime.

In the second half, however, Ferris State rallied. FSU cut the lead to 20 only five minutes into the second half and narrowed the lead to 13 points (47-34) with 8:07 remaining.

The Bulldogs whittled the lead down to as few as four points (52-48) with 3:38 to play, but could get not closer as Oakland answered with an 8-0 run to put the game out of reach.

FSU held a slim 31-26 rebounding edge, but turned the ball over 28 times compared to only 18 for Oakland.

Junior guard Becci Houdek paced FSU with 13 points while sophomore guard Tricia Principe added 10 points. The Bulldogs played only eight players in the contest with junior forward Tiara Adams narrowly missing double-digits with nine points.

The Bulldogs shot 52% (13-25) from the floor in the second half after a 31.8% (7-22) effort in the opening frame to finish at 42.6% (20-47) for the contest. The Bulldogs were only three-of-17 (17.6%) behind the three-point stripe and made seven-of-eight (87.5%) free throws.

Meanwhile, the Golden Grizzlies connected on 44.7% (21-47) of their shots and were aided by a 14-of-19 (73.7%) showing at the free throw line. They made four-of-12 (33.3%) treys.

Oakland, which held a 13-4 edge in steals and a 17-6 advantage in assists, was paced by Hanna Reising’s game-high 14 points. Sharise Calhoun added 13 points for the Golden Grizzlies, who played 12 players in the game.

Sunday’s game was the lone official exhibition for the Bulldog women’s squad. FSU officially opens the 2009-10 season by visiting former GLIAC-member Gannon for a non-conference game on Friday, Nov. 20, inside the Hammermill Center in Erie, Pa.
